BHILS

Semi-arid degraded and/or denuded deciduous forest in an undulating hilly terrain
Banswara district, RAJASTHAN
Bhil|North-Western India

The Bhil tribe are the largest and the most widely distributed tribe in South Asia.
The word ‘Bhil’ comes from billu or villu, which in Dravidian languages translates to ‘bow’. Just as their name suggests, the Bhil people are adroit archers.

In India, the tribe is spread across North-Western states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra, while North-Eastern parts like Tripura also domicile certain sections.

They have traditionally been a hunting and gathering community, and are dependent on the forest for fuel wood, tendu leaves (used in beedis). However, after being displaced from the forests that they once protected, they have taken up settled lifestyles in the semi-arid areas in Banswara, Dahod and Jhabua.

The Landing Together team met with members of the Bhil tribe who had been re-settled without compensation because of a road construction project in the forest. The tribe struggles to secure both collective and individual forest rights.
