BIRHORS

Tropical moist forests in an undulating hilly terrain
Ranchi district, JHARKHAND
Birhor |Jharkhand

The Birhor tribe is another PVTG, recently resettled by the government outside the forest area in Ranchi, Jharkhand.

Traditionally, the Birhors led a hunting-gathering way of life in the forest. Totems based on plants and animals from the forest still hold deep spiritual significance for the Birhor people. They believe that their clan totems need to be protected and they eating, killing or destroying them has an adverse effect on their own clan.

The Landing Together team visited the outskirts of Ranchi to document the new settlements of the Birhors. In the last decade or so, many Birhors have been re-settled out of the forest and forced into the modern lifestyle at the mercy of failing governmental schemes and little else for livelihood.

Birhor people used to wreathe ropes out of vines from the forest. Now, they use plastic string instead and make bags for meagre returns. Meanwhile, governmental schemes like Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) have failed, leading to multiple instances of death from starvation and horrid living conditions in the re-settlement areas.
