The above two trailers provide a glimpse to various land related issues affecting indigenous peoples across tribal mainland and the northeast India.
Filming
Initial idea of the Landing Together was to make one film.
As we began transecting between one remote tribal village to another we were overwhelmed with stories being told to us by men, women, youths, elders and others.
There was no budget to do recce.
Recce is term used for doing a pre-filming visit to a location to determine its suitability for shooting. In case of documentary film, recce also helps to understand the issues, to 'choose' and bond with the protagonists before filming. We had no scripted storyline for filming. All we did was to keep our mind and soul and eyes and ears open!
We consciously choose to approach the filmmaking without preconceived ideas or notions about any particular issue.
The team visited marginal populations facing diverse range of issues in various vulnerable landscapes all over India. Yet, did not have luxury to spend more than two-days in same location.
In total we were in village filming for about 150 days covering about 16 districts in 11 states of India.
We interacted with over 20 indigenous and forest-dependent communities.
Each tribe was unique in a way they spoke different languages, food culture was unique, religion varied within the tribal community, but everyone considered themselves guardian of the nature.
Given the diversity of the issues, the Landing Together team decided to make a range of short and feature length independent films.
