Kattunayakan|Southern India
The word Kattunayakan means ‘the king of the jungle’ in Tamil. They are one of the earliest known inhabitants of the Western Ghats and are spread across Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
The Landing Together team met the Kattunayakan tribe along with the Betta Kuruba in the Nilgiris. One of the emerging issue of communal forest in indigenous territories is the 'human-animal' conflict, and the spread of weed - lantana in the forest areas.
In Gudalur municipality of Nilgiris, stories of human-elephant conflicts have increased over the last year (2016). The increasing numbers of in-migrants to the region may be a major cause of this. Further, the infestation of the lantana weed has ravaged many native plant species in the forest. With a shortage of these species, animals are being forced to venture outside the forest in search of food.
