Kharia/ Khadiya|Odisha
The Khadiya or Kharia tribes are sub-divided into three groups – Hill Kharia, Delki Kharia and the Dudh Kharia. The Hill (Pahadi) Kharia tribe speak an Indo-Aryan language – Kharia Thar. The Pahadi Kharia is a food gathering, hunting and gathering community.
The Landing Together team interacted with the Pahadi Kharia tribe, who live in the hilly landscapes of Odisha.
The Pahari Kharia people continue to be a forest-dependant community, whose subsistence now have moved on small-scale farming activities centred on the family.
The Landing Together team found that most of the Pahari Kharia people interviewed lack individual land tenure security of their farms and houses. Their major struggle has been against the CAMPA (Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning) plantations and the Vana Suraksha Samiti (VSS), which indulges in timber plantation including on the individual tenure land in the region.
