Mara|Maraland, Mizoram
Mara are the indigenous peoples of Mara Autonomous District Council (Maraland - MADC) in Mizoram. They are spread of Mizoram and neighbouring areas of Myanmar. Mara peoples speak at least 5 different dialects of the Mara Language – a Sino-Tibetan language – out of which Tlosaih is the lingua franca.
Historically, the creation of Myanmar was a critical point for the Mara people, as the Kolodyne river which flows through Maraland made one group Burmese and another India. However, both groups have adapted well and continue to preserve their vibrant cultural expressions.
The Landing Together team also met Shri Hiphei, the current speaker of the Mizoram Legislative Assembly. Shri Hiphei is from the Saiha District of Mizoram and belongs to the Indian National Congress. He explained the necessity of autonomous councils such as the Mara Autonomous District Council in Mizoram with reference to preservation of both cultural expressions and rich bio-diversity in North-Eastern States.
