Munda | Jharkhand
The Munda tribes are settled in and around the forest areas of Jharkhand, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Orissa. Most Munda peoples are agriculturists and hunters. They speak their own language – Mundari, an Austro-Asiatic language, as well as Sadri or Nagpuri, an Indo-Aryan language.
The Landing Together team visited Mundas in Jharkhand during one of their most important festivals – Sarhul. Sarhul is a festival of flowers and is celebrated in March-April. Traditionally, Sal flowers are offered and exchanged among people, as a form of worshipping Mother Nature.
The Mundas have their own religion called Sarna, wherein the primary God-head is Singbonga – meaning the sun god. They worship nature in every form - land, water, trees, birds, animals, air, leaves and fruits. The values of such tradition is inculcated among children through tribal festivals like Sarhul.
