Majhi|Chhattisgarh
The term ‘Majhi’ means boatman in their native tongue – Bundelkhandi. ‘Mallah’, ‘Kewat’ and ‘Nabik’ are also used to refer to the Majhi tribe.
They believe that their ancestors once inhabited Ganga’s banks, either at Banaras or Allahabad. The tribe members are spread over districts of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Majhi women often sport unique tattoos on their bodies. The Majhi diet contains a lot of meat, fish and pork, wilds roots, tubers, leaves, fruits and the iconic Mahua liquor.
The Landing Together team interviewed Majhi peoples in Chhattisgarh, where their major concerns are water pollution caused by coal mining near the village. The pollution has destroyed crops and ponds, and depleted fish populations.
n another location, the Majhi community is protesting against Bauxite mining, which has debilitated farming livelihoods and displaced people without proper compensation. Further, reforestation efforts have largely focussed on eucalyptus monocultures, which are of little benefit to the forest or the Majhi tribe.
